Enjoy family adventures together...
at family-friendly prices.

We know fun isn't about scenery alone. That's why we've sought out cool stuff for both parents and kids. Meet koalas and kangaroos, learn to throw spears and boomerangs, or swim with turtles. We'll create a fun trip for you and your family that lets you meet other travelling families, but also enjoy time together exploring all that Cairns has to offer.

We were very satisfied with the level of customer service and professionalism we received from Small World Journeys.  It offered us the ability to customize a trip.  We’d recommend SWJ – it’s great have to the option to explore an area.- Christine Wong, New York, USA (Aug 09)

In Cairns, there is something to appeal to the whole family: think semi-submarines, a croc-spotting cruise, and a day at the waterslides. Although the Cairns area offers enchanting rainforest, expansive tablelands, and the spectacular Great Barrier Reef, we know kids don’t have fun with scenery alone. That’s why we’ve found cool stuff like close encounters with koalas, natural rainforest waterslides, and instruction on finding "Nemos" at the Great Barrier Reef. This trip includes all of the iconic attractions parents will love, but with a focus on matching the energy levels and attention spans of young traveller

Sample Detailed Itinerary for Families

Day 1: Arrival and Choice of Activities

You are transferred from Cairns International Airport to the most kid-friendly budget resort in Cairns. You have your own self-contained holiday unit, so the choice is yours to eat out or prepare your own meals. During the week, kids will enjoy the adventure playground, mini golf, two swimming pools, giant jumping pillows and movies on the giant movie screen under the stars. Parents will appreciate wireless internet, self-catering facilities, and meeting other families at the pancake breakfast.

Day 2: Rainforest Waterfalls, Ancient Volcanic Craters and Duck-Billed Platypus

The lush mountains of the Dividing Range rise up from Cairns, and today you explore with a guide the Highlands’ fantastic natural wonders. Take a short walk through the jungle to Josephine Falls—where the triple tiered cascades end with a natural waterslide and a refreshing swimming hole. Swim in an ancient volcanic crater, spot the duck-billed platypus in its natural habitat and see Milla Milla Falls from behind its watery veil. Find out why Babinda Boulders is steeped in aboriginal legend, and let your guide teach your family about the enchanting creatures of the rainforest. There is plenty of lively music, singing and games to keep the kids entertained while travelling today. (L)

Day 3:Sugarworld Waterslides

Splash, squirt and spray today at Sugarworld Waterslides, a popular park for local families. Enjoy a relaxed atmosphere among tropical gardens and well maintained parkland where friendly peacocks, ducks and geese roam freely. Bring along a picnic lunch and use the barbecue facilities or simply munch on the varied food available at the kiosk inside the park. There are four giant waterslides for adults and children—all with distinctly Queensland names like Banana Bender—that vary in speed, darkness, twists and turns. With a wading pool for toddlers and a huge fun pool as well, Sugarworld is sure to appeal to the whole family.

Day 4: Aboriginal-Led Exploration, Croc-Spotting Cruise and Jungle Swimming Hole

Perhaps the best way to learn about aboriginal culture, today you walk with gentle aboriginal guides of the Kuku Yalanji tribe along the coast they’ve called home for thousands of years. Their specialty is helping the young ones find mud crabs, mussels, and other “bush tucker” among the mangroves. Learn how to throw spears and try your hand at catching food the traditional way. Later you’re be invited to your guide’s home where you meet the family, hear tales of the indigenous “Dreamtime” and eat your day’s catch. In the afternoon hop aboard a croc-spotting cruise on the Daintree River to get a glimpse of these magnificent creatures in the wild. Your guide knows all of their favourite places to hang out, as well as all about the creatures who live here in the jungle. Then it’s off to a private waterfall that is reached by a short twisty path through the jungle. A natural swimming hole beneath the falls is a perfect cool-off spot at the end of the day. (L)

Day 5: Wildlife Centre, Australian Animals and Reef Teach

Today visit an all-weather wildlife exhibit snclosed by a 20-metre high glass dome, and home of some cuddly koalas. And for those of you who have always wanted a photo holding one of these loaveable creatures--here's your chance. You're also immersed in a replicated rainforest environment while birds such as parrots, cockatoos, lorikeets, dves and rosellas fly freely around you. Get up close to cute rainforest wallabies (a cousin to the kangaroo), observe curlews, frogmouths and the resident giant cocodile along with other animals such as frogs, turtles, pythons, lizards and adorable bettongs. Don't miss Reptile Rap and the Furry Friends show, and listen for the distinctive and famous call of the Australian icon, the laughing kookaburra.

In the early evening, you are welcome guests at a fun and dynamic presentation designed to help you identify the wild and wacky creatures at The Great Barrier Reef. A friendly marine biologist tells you about fish that you can watch change colour, which animal breathes through his bum, and how and where to find "Nemo." There's plenty of hands-on time for the littler ones.

Day 6:Green Island and The Great Barrier Reef

The Great Barrier Reef--one of the world's natural wonders and a must-see on any family's itinerary--is easily accessed today by way of a short cruise to Green Island. Green Island is ideal for families, as there's plenty of shade on the island and calm, clear water for paddling, swimming and snorkeling. Have a look out for giant clams, the bizarre "sucker fish" and even turtles in a semi-submarine. A kid-friendly guide takes the family on a short island walk to explain things like which plants are edible, how to break open coconuts and why the aboriginals called this "place of the haunted spirits". Kids also get a tour of the boat's wheelhouse, a photo with the captain, and a cool cruising membership to the Turtle Rescue Club. Take an optional side trip to see the largest crocodile in captivity in the world. (L)

Day 7:Trip Conclusion or Extension

After breakfast, prepare for your journey home or enjoy a few optional activities such as the Kuranda Skyrail, waterskiing on Lake Tineroo, or Tjapukai aboriginal Culture Park. If departing, you are transferred to Cairns International Airport.
