Regenerative Tourism
We design educational travel experiences that introduce students to environmental stewardship, community engagement and cultural learning within the Cairns region. Our programs include activities that explore topics such as waste reduction, wildlife monitoring, habitat restoration and responsible visitor behaviour.
Each tour incorporates perspectives shared by Australia’s Traditional Owners, opportunities for participation in community-based projects, and educational experiences developed by our team in collaboration with local partners.
Since 2008, our activities have included:
- Supporting the education of nearly 10,000 children, the majority of whom are girls.
- Participating in native tree planting projects in partnership with Envirocare.
- Donating 5% of net profits to local charities, including more than $70,000 provided to the Fitzroy Island Turtle Rehabilitation Centre.
- Coordinating clean-up activities that have removed hundreds of kilograms of waste from local waterways and beaches.
- Employing local staff and providing workplace initiatives such as flexible work arrangements, volunteer opportunities and mental wellbeing support.
Through these activities, we aim to provide educational experiences that connect visitors with local environmental, cultural and community initiatives while contributing financial and volunteer support to selected regional projects.

“This tour increased my awareness of my personal responsibility. I learned in ways both big and small [Small World Journeys is] doing what they can to help communities, the environment, and sustainability. I will step up in ways that are available to me and speak up for equality for peoples and the saving of the environment.”
– Craig Lore, student, San Jose State University, USA (Jan 2022)

our
Vision
Vision
To be Australia’s premier provider of education for youth outside the classroom.
How We Have Contributed to People, Profitability & Planet
Through financial contributions and in-kind support, we have assisted community-led projects involved in the restoration and maintenance of mangrove and riparian ecosystems. Details of these projects, including locations and activities undertaken, are available on request. Our programs have also provided employment and engagement opportunities for people from a range of backgrounds, including Indigenous women, a Palestinian refugee, young people with disabilities, and individuals experiencing or recovering from homelessness.
Our educational tours include activities designed to increase participants’ awareness of environmental, cultural and social considerations associated with travel. Participants learn practical approaches to reducing their environmental footprint, supporting local economies and engaging respectfully with communities. Learning outcomes are delivered through workshops, guided experiences and interactions with local stakeholders.
Through our tours and operations we are working to promote these UN Sustainable Development Goals:
Who we sponsor and support (and sometimes kiss)
Our goal is to increase our documented contribution to local environmental and community programs while measuring and reducing the negative impacts of our operations. This is why Small World Journeys has committed at least 5% of net profits each year to support non-profit community and environmental organisations. We also give kisses for free.
Acknowledgement of Traditional Owners
We humbly acknowledge Aboriginal People and Torres Strait Islander People as the first inhabitants of Australia and acknowledge Traditional Owners of the lands where we work and our groups travel, which include the Yirrganydji, Yidinji, Kuku Yalanji, Gimuy Walubara Yidinji and Djabugay people.
We were inspired by the beautiful artwork of local indigenous artist Colin Higgins – painter and musician from Yarrabah. We commissioned Colin for the use of his painting (symbolising the world in the dry season) and are grateful for his contribution to Small World Journeys
